Te Huanui
Te Huanui is a 21 week online reo Māori programme open to anyone, anywhere in the world who wants to learn to kōrero Māori.
Grounded in the Te Ataarangi methodology, Te Huanui focuses on building confidence, fluency, and natural language use through speaking and listening - from your very first class.

What Will You Learn?
Te Huanui supports learners to:
-
Build confidence to kōrero Māori in real-life situations
-
Develop listening and comprehension skills
-
Strengthen pronunciation and natural language patterns
-
Engage in everyday conversational reo
-
Progress through structured levels from beginner to conversational
The focus is on speaking first, not just learning about the language, but using it.
Who is Te Huanui for?
Te Huanui is designed for:
-
Absolute beginners through to more advanced learners
-
Individuals wanting to learn reo Māori from home
-
People unable to attend in-person classes
-
Anyone seeking a structured, supportive online reo journey
This programme is open globally, you can join from anywhere in the world!

How the programme works?
Te Huanui is delivered fully online and designed to create a connected, supportive learning environment, no matter where you are.
Small Group Learning
You will learn in a consistent small group (around 10 people) with your dedicated Taiwhirinaki (tutor), creating a safe and supportive space to practice.

Structured Full Immersion
From the very first lesson, learning happens through full immersion.
There is:
-
No writing during class
-
A strong focus on listening
-
Emphasis on speaking and oral confidence
-
Encouragement to welcome mistakes as part of learning
Writing notes is intentionally set aside during lessons to fast-track your ability to think and respond naturally in reo Māori.

Rākau-Based Learning
We use rākau (Cuisenaire rods), images and visual prompts to build mental frameworks that connect language with context - strengthening subconscious language acquisition.
Each lesson builds on the last, supporting steady progression and reinforcing your learning through repetition and practice.

Extensive Speaking Practice
In breakout rooms, you practice speaking repeatedly, often receiving 20–30 times more oral practice than a traditional in-person class. When you can actively practice speaking in every session, it helps shift your reo from conscious learning into natural use.

LMS Access
You will have access to our online learning management system (LMS), where you can:
-
Watch recordings of each lesson
-
Access learning resources and materials
-
Continue your learning outside of class
-
Connect with other learners and kaiako through discussion forums
This ensures you stay supported throughout your learning journey, even between sessions.
